FOOLISH OPERATIONS seeks 4 artists
Deadline: July 31, 2007
Honorarium: $800
For our summer research lab, Foolish Operations seeks 4 professional artists: radio
artists, field recording and editing artists, installation artists (in situ), web artists, video
artists, text artists…
Our summer operation?
It’s a dance lab! Vancouver’s first mobile clubbing dance lab hits the streets in August-
September 2007 with support from the Canada Council for the Arts.
Mobile clubbing is a spontaneous gathering for personal stereo users who dance to their
own music in a public location.
We are looking for 4 other artists to join our research to explore dance and sound in
public locations using mini-fm transmitters. How do people experience Mobile clubbing?
Is there an art to comfort? How does public space and private sound affect comfort?
We’ll be testing out temporary modification of soundscapes through radio, ephemeral
installations, collecting observations and testimonies, making Utube movies.
Requirements:
- You are currently living in Vancouver.
- Dancing! We will dance for 30 minutes outdoors during 2 weeks of research, rain or
shine.
- Available 4-8 pm on August 13-24 except weekends.
- Able to set aside enough flexible time in early September to create an art project of your choice (individually or collaboratively) on the subject of Mobile clubbing. It will be part of an art exhibit. You must manage your time to meet a deadline of September 10.
- You will participate in the installation of the exhibit including setup and strike during
the second week of September (exhibit opens September 15).
- You have community art experience, or a genuine interest in community art.
- We may ask you to help find participants and volunteers.
Honoraria for each artist: $800

Mobile clubbing in Vancouver
Come to our next mobile clubbing session on Monday June 4 at 6:30pm at the central branch of the Vancouver Public Library - we’re going to be dancing our hearts out on the Robson side (by the stairs).

Next mobile clubbing in St John’s tomorrow!
Our next mobile clubbing session is tomorrow (Saturday May 26) in St John’s Newfoundland. Meet us at the LSPU Hall at noon to walk to our secret destination.
The last mobile clubbing session on Wednesday (see photos below) was great - the sun came out, the jackets came off as we warmed up to our tunes. The nine dancers grooved for an hour, nearly beating the Vancouver record of 75 minutes.
